Beyond the Beach: 5 Freshwater Swimming Spots Worth the Drive

July 22, 2026 Kim Parcher

A stay at the Beach Club Resort puts you just steps from one of Vancouver Island’s most beloved beaches. But if you’re craving a change of scenery or a refreshing freshwater dip, you’re in luck. Within an hour’s drive, you’ll find everything from crystal-clear rivers to warm, family-friendly lakes.

Whether you’re planning a leisurely afternoon within the Oceanside area or a scenic day trip to Port Alberni or Nanaimo, these five freshwater destinations offer the perfect way to cool off while discovering another side of Vancouver Island.

Pack a picnic, grab your towels, and get ready to explore some of the region’s most beautiful lakes and rivers.

Top Bridge (Englishman River)

Approximately 10 minutes from the Beach Club Resort

If you’re looking to escape the heat without venturing far from Parksville, Top Bridge is hard to beat. Beneath the iconic suspension bridge, the Englishman River carves through smooth rock formations, creating deep pools perfect for a refreshing swim.

Locals flock here on hot summer days to swim, lounge on the sun-warmed rocks, walk the labyrinth of trails, or simply soak in the peaceful forest setting. Adventurous visitors will find a few popular spots for cliff jumping, while families appreciate the easy access to the river.

Spider Lake

Approximately 25 minutes from the Beach Club Resort

Spider Lake Provincial Park offers a peaceful freshwater lake that feels like a hidden retreat. Despite its name, Spider Lake is one of the friendliest swimming destinations on Vancouver Island, with calm, shallow water that warms beautifully throughout the summer.

The small sandy beach, picnic tables, and a quiet, motor-free atmosphere make it especially popular for young families.

If you bring a paddleboard or kayak, you’ll discover the lake’s unique shape with countless sheltered coves branching off in every direction.

Cameron Lake

Approximately 25 minutes from the Beach Club Resort

Framed by towering mountain slopes, Cameron Lake offers a scenic location for a swim. Located along Highway 4 between Parksville and Port Alberni, it’s an easy stop for guests heading west for the day or simply looking for an escape from the summer heat.

The lake’s crystal-clear water is undeniably chilly, but that’s exactly what makes it so inviting on a hot day.

Several roadside pullouts provide easy access to the shoreline, while the Day Use Area offers a small beach, picnic tables, and the ability to launch a kayak or windsurfer – a popular thing to do during the afternoon winds.

Sproat Lake

Approximately 1 hour from the Beach Club Resort

This emerald-coloured lake, surrounded by gorgeous mountain scenery and plenty of room to explore, makes Sproat Lake well worth the drive.

The Day Use Area at Sproat Lake Provincial Park offers an easy place to spend the afternoon, complete with plenty of parking, a swimming dock, boat launch, picnic lawns and convenient facilities.

After your swim, take the short walk to view the fascinating K’ak’awin petroglyphs carved into the lakeside rock centuries ago.

If you are craving a peaceful escape surrounded by nature, few places rival the beauty of Sproat Lake.

Westwood Lake

Approximately 40 minutes from the Beach Club Resort

Located at the base of Mount Benson, Westwood Lake is Nanaimo’s premier freshwater swimming destination. The clear, refreshing water, sandy beach and picturesque forest setting make it a favourite place to spend a summer afternoon.

The main beach features a roped-off area with lifeguards on duty during the summer, along with washrooms, changerooms, picnic areas and a playground. If you aren’t quite ready to leave after your swim, walk the 5.5-kilometre loop that circles the lake, or bring a kayak or paddleboard to explore from the water.

Discover More Beyond the Beach

One of the best things about staying at the Beach Club Resort is that you’re perfectly positioned to experience both the ocean and Vancouver Island’s spectacular freshwater swimming spots.

Whether you prefer floating down the Englishman River, relaxing on a quiet lakeshore, or cooling off after a scenic road trip, these five destinations all make easy day trips before returning to the comfort of your oceanfront accommodation.
