There’s something about a crisp fall morning that makes you want to get in the car and see where the day takes you. From the Beach Club Resort in Parksville, Port Alberni is an easy day trip, with plenty of reasons to slow down once you arrive.
Watch the salmon run at Stamp River, wander trails full of fall colour, explore the Quays, and make time for a good lunch (and maybe a doughnut or two). Then head back to the Beach Club Resort for a relaxing evening by the ocean.
Watch the Salmon at Stamp River
If there’s one experience to plan your fall visit around, make it Stamp River Provincial Park. A variety of salmon push upstream past the falls and through the fish ladder starting in late August, and this natural phenomenon lasts until early December.
Black bears also come to the river to feed during this time. Seeing one isn't guaranteed, but it’s a good possibility. Give wildlife plenty of space, stay alert on the trails and follow the park’s bear safety guidance. Even without a bear sighting, the sound of the falls, the colourful foliage, and the sight of salmon making their way upstream make this stop memorable.
Find Your Favourite Fall Colours
Port Alberni has several lovely places for a walk beneath changing leaves. Pick one trail for a leisurely day, or visit more than one if the weather is on your side and you want to immerse yourself in nature.
Maplehurst Trail is a beautiful choice when you want fall colour to be the focus, but don’t want to commit to a long hike. Follow the rustic trail network beneath bigleaf maples, Douglas fir and cedar, then listen for the creek as you make your way through the forest.
Kitsuksis Creek Trail lets you follow the creek through town on a mostly paved path while admiring the fall leaves. This loop trail also has a pretty waterfall and trestle to gawk at. Watch for small signs about halfway through the loop. This trail is an easy place to fit in a walk between your other stops.
Choose Rogers Creek Nature Trail when you want a longer walk. The trail winds through the forest alongside Rogers Creek, with mossy trees, small hills, and an old logging bridge. Allow roughly two hours if you want to explore without rushing, and wear shoes with good grip, as exposed roots and damp ground are part of the experience.
Explore the Renewed Harbour Quay
Head to Harbour Quay for a stroll along Port Alberni’s waterfront. The area has recently received a refresh through Home Town Takeover Canada, which filmed in Port Alberni in summer 2026.
Take in the inlet views, browse the revitalized businesses, and make room for a treat (the Donut Shop is a local favourite). It’s the sort of stop that turns a pleasant waterfront walk into a road trip tradition.
As the Harbour Quay businesses settle back in after renovations, please check opening hours before you go, especially if there is a particular shop you want to visit.
Stop for Lunch or a Cozy Cafe Break
A fall adventure deserves good food, and Port Alberni gives you plenty of reasons to linger.
For lunch, Bare Bones Fish House & Smokery is a great local option, especially if anyone in your group has food sensitivities. This casual seafood restaurant has a 100% gluten-free food menu that’s equally comforting as it is delicious.
Wildflower Bakeshop & Cafe is a perfect spot to warm up after a crisp fall walk. Pop in for a coffee and see what’s fresh in the pastry case. They also have a great seasonal brunch menu full of local ingredients.
If you’re in the mood for a sweet or savoury crepe, try The Bomber’s Cafe and Creperie. Perfect for a fall day trip, the pumpkin pie crepe is hard to pass up, with pumpkin filling and spiced cream cheese icing tucked inside.
Check each spot’s hours before you set out, especially if you’re travelling on a Sunday or later in the season.
Have a Little More Time?
If you’d like to add another stop, consider Victoria Quay for a walk along the Somass River estuary. It’s another place where you may spot black bears across the water during salmon season. As at Stamp River, watch from a safe distance and never approach wildlife.
You could also leave your schedule open. Fall weather has a way of changing plans, and part of the pleasure of this trip is having time to follow a trail a little farther or stay for another coffee.
End Your Day by the Ocean
After a day of salmon viewing, colourful trails, and exploring Port Alberni, head back to the Beach Club Resort for dinner by the ocean. Settle in at the resort’s restaurant for a meal featuring local ingredients, and share your favourite moments from the day as you look out over Parksville Beach.
That’s what makes the resort such a lovely home base for a cross-island adventure: you can spend the day discovering somewhere new, then return to the comfort of your oceanside room.
